Leo Bassetto

Leo Bassetto, age 95, of Friendship, Wisconsin went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at his home.

Mass of Catholic Burial will be 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 29, 2018 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Friendship, Wisconsin. Father Francis Dias will officiate. Interment will be at the St. Leo Catholic Cemetery, Friendship, Wisconsin.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Roseberry’s Funeral Home.

Leo was born September 13, 1922 in Marostica, Italy to Louis and Esther (Tonniazzo) Bassetto. After serving as a US Marine in World War II in the Pacific Theater where he participated in many of the historic battles on the Marshall Islands; Tarawa and Saipan Islands. He was wounded during the Saipan battle and received two purple hearts. After the war, Lee and Dolores met on a blind date and were married on April 7, 1951 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Chicago. They were blessed with six children, 15 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren (with one on the way!) In 1959 they decided to convert the front portion of their house into a business on the East Side of Chicago. This small carry out business soon grew in popularity; Lee decided to open a second location in Calumet City. He moved to Friendship, WI in 1976 to retire but soon opened Bassetto’s Restaurant. Leo and Dolores owned and operated Bassetto’s until retiring in 1999. He continued to work on his farm and loved to garden, cook, make homemade wine and sausage. Leo also enjoyed fishing and hunting with his family and friends and watching the Packer games.

Leo was a member of the Second Marine Division, Red Cloud American Legion 250, Purple Hearts Society, Disabled Veterans of America, NRA and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Esther Bassetto; and son, James Bassetto.

Steve, Casey & boys and the entire Bassetto family….my heartfelt sympathy to you all. I met Leo (US Marine) when Steve accompanied his Dad and me with my Dad (US Navy–PT Boat So Pacific) on the Old Glory Honor Flight from Appleton to Washington, DC…almost 8 years ago honoring our heroes from WWII, our fathers!! The greatest generation. Leo was a true American hero who sacrificed so much for our country’s freedom in the South Pacific and I was honored to be in his company that day where these veterans were honored to see THEIR beautiful WWII monument in Washington! It was a wonderful trip and so cool that all the Bassetto “band of brothers” met him and surprised him just before heading into the Arlington Cemetery! What greater pride to display to one’s father. He made so much out of his life afterwards, a true test of internal strength and an American inspiring legacy. May you all find comfort in the remarkable life he lived and smile at a life well lived indeed! You are in my thoughts and prayers. Big hugs to all!

So sorry for your loss. It appears that Leo lived a wonderful life and will whoop it up in Heaven. That is the way I have learned to treat death after we lost our son, Kevin back in 1987. Do not remorse but celebrate his life and all the wonderful memories you have of your lives together. I wonder if we can, or want to live to 95 years. The write up is a great tribute to Leo and I am sure he is pleased to be looking down upon his family.
    God Bless,
    Ken and Barb Rapacz
