Gladys Elizabeth Manthey

Gladys Elizabeth MantheyGladys E. (McMahon) Manthey, age 81, of Adams, Wisconsin passed away January 25, 2016 at the Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Visitation will be 1:00pm-3:00pm on Sunday February 7, 2016 at the VFW in Adams, Wisconsin where Gladys was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. Funeral services will be held immediately following at 3:00pm. A luncheon is planned afterwards.

Gladys was born December 11, 1934 in Adams County, Wisconsin the first daughter of Samuel and Villa (Podoll) McMahon.

Gladys graduated from Adams-Friendship area High School in 1952.

Gladys met the love of her life at an early age and married Glen Manthey on December 20, 1952 in Adams, Wisconsin. This marriage was blessed with five children Gary, Gene, Greg, Gloria and Glenys.
Gladys worked at various jobs to include her beloved position as a local reporter for the Adams County Times weekly newspaper. In that position, she passed on most of the towns activities and occasionally had the privilege of letting the town know of her children’s accomplishments. Of all the jobs she held, the one that gave her the most satisfaction was her wedding cake and baking business. Gladys was a wedding cake and baking expert. She taught her children at an early age how to bake, make the frostings from scratch to making the roses for the final touches on someone’s special cake. There was never a shortage of sweets at Gladys’s house.

Gladys was her husband Glen’s biggest fan. Whether she was helping Glen while he served as the Chief of Police in Adams, or the first Sheriff’s Deputy in Adams County or taking calls for Glen while he ran The Standard Oil business and gas station in Adams, she was his partner. While Glen was employed as a special deputy U.S. Marshall for the Mariel Cuban Crisis at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin along with their sons, Gary & Greg, Gladys loaded the motor home and lived with Glen and the boys during this time.

Gladys loved to travel and the Winnebago enabled them to travel with their mothers to New York City and

everywhere in between. Toe-tapping trips to Nashville, fishing trips, or just scenic rides together seemed to bring them both much happiness. She also loved their family farm. There, she gardened, canned and became very self-sufficient in the process. Her canning skills enabled them to get by even during the toughest times. The farm was their happy place. A simple place to raise children, teach responsibilities, bond and teach life skills and most of all, be with family.

An additional tract of land was purchased by Glen and Gladys that contained the very same tiny one room school house where both Glen and Gladys attended. Without much work, the school soon became a hunting camp and a center for snowmobile activities. The school and the original school bell remained in the family for years to include the wood burning stove that Glen and Gladys would have to help ‘fire up’ during their school days.

One of the most proud moments for both Glen and Gladys was when the family farm was selected to be part of the Farm Progress Days. The 100 acre farm from transposed from the grassy fields to buildings, tents, state of the art farm equipment and tourists from all over the world attended.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Samuel & Villa McMahon, Father & Mother-in-law: Paul and Bessie Manthey; Husband: Glen Manthey, Son: Gene Manthey, Brother-in-law: Edward Manthey, Brother-in-law; Robert Manthey
