Morton (Mort) K. Irwin

Morton (Mort) K. Irwin, 86, of Baraboo, passed away peacefully on February 8th at the St. Claire Hospice House in Baraboo.  He was born in Middleton on January 12, 1929 to Charles and Josephine (Thoreson) Irwin. Siblings include John Irwin, Ellie Ferry, Doris Bolgrihn, Marian Bartels and John Irwin.  He was preceded in death by brothers, Arnold and Robert.

Born and raised on his family’s farm, Mort was no stranger to hard work.  At age 14, he drove a milk truck before school and after school when the war started.  He graduated from Portage High School in 1946 and worked at odd jobs before enlisting in the United States Army in the Signal Core, serving from 1949-1951.  During this time he met Sarah Lee Kight, and the two were married on Christmas Eve, 1953 in Uvalda, Georgia. Mort and Sarah celebrated their 61st anniversary this past December. Mort loved to fish and hunt with this sons and ran a bait shop out of his home. The family were members at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Oregon where Mort was active with the building and grounds committee as well as the church council.

Mort worked for Wisconsin Power and Light as a lineman for 35 years. Upon retirement, they moved to Monroe Center on Lake Petenwell. Mort kept busy fishing and gardening and made money cutting wood for area campers.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah; two sons: Charles (Mary Jo) and Rick (Joan); five grandchildren:  January Muetz (Pat), Jillian Irwin, Shawn Irwin (Courtney), Chase Irwin, Kelly Jo Irwin; great-grandson Logan Irwin and great granddaughters, Ruby and Lilly Muetz and Courtney Phillippi.  He was preceded in death by his son Thomas in 2000.

A private graveside service will he held at a later date.  If anyone wishes to make a memorial donation, please direct to the St. Claire Hospice House in Baraboo. Please make checks payable to Home Health United Hospice.

    Sarah we are so sorry to hear about Mort, He was a great neighbor and a wonderful person. He will be missed. Even without not being able to see very well he always had a twinkle in his eye when he laughed or smiles….. I will miss him and think of him often
