Maynard William Pier

Maynard William Pier, age 80, of the Town of Rome, Wisconsin passed peacefully into eternal life on Friday, August 28, 2015 at home with his loving wife and daughter by his side. He had patiently fought a courageous battle with cancer.

Private family services were held Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at Roseberry’s Funeral Home in Friendship, Wisconsin. Pastor Paul Tonn of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Wisconsin Rapids officiated. Internment was at Spring Branch Cemetery in the Town of Rome with full military honors presented by American Legion Post #65.

Maynard was born December 29, 1934 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As a child Maynard developed a love of music and learned the trumpet when he was eight years old. He wanted to play “just like Harry James”.

Maynard played in the band at Custer High School and also marched with the Craig Schlosser Legion Post Band in Milwaukee. In September 1953 Maynard enlisted in the Army and was sent to Fort Campbell, KY where he trained with the 11th Airborne Division. After completing his training he was asked to join the 11th Airborne Division Band. As a member of this band he proudly played for President Eisenhower and at various military events. Being an extremely talented musician, he was selected to attend the U.S. Naval School of Music at Anacostia, Washington, D.C. where he received his degree in music as an Army Bandsman in 1954.

Maynard married Kathleen on November 1, 1958 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They were the love of each other’s lives sharing 57 wonderful years together.

During those years Maynard worked in the trucking industry. He loved driving semi over the road for long hauls. Eventually he retired from Dawes Transport as a Marketing Rep. Maynard was a member of the Transportation Club of Milwaukee and the Ozaukee Traffic Club.

Later in life one of Maynard’s favorite pastimes was playing golf with his son-in-law and grandson both of whom he taught the game. He also enjoyed traveling all over the western United States with his wife and of course playing his trumpet. Maynard played with the Wisconsin Rapids City Band for eight years and for various church programs in the area.

Maynard is survived by his devoted wife, Kathleen; adoring daughter and son-in-law, Lori and DJ Djumadi; son, Douglas (Cindy) Pier of Green Bay; cherished grandson Jordan (Hilary) Djumadi of Wisconsin Rapids and dear nephew Rick (Gail) Pier of Sherwood, OR. Maynard is also survived by his furry companion, Buttons whom cuddled with him to the very end.

Roseberry’s Funeral Home compassionately assisted the family with the arrangements.
