Best father- in-law I could of ever hoped for…. Living & loving & laughing always. I love you. I’ll miss our talks about the unconditional love & joy from our puppydogs, how happy Penash 1 & 2 and Boomer are to be with you now…better stock up on the treats cuz I need you to watch over Lager for me until we are all together! Watching you & Betty together, I saw best friends and true love!! Your enthusiasm for any & all of our Alaskan adventures made them all unforgettable… No matter if it was your snoring or protecting your wife from the huge bear stalking her in the outhouse, you didn’t hesitate, all you needed was your underwear (thank you) & your gun! You taught Garry to be a great & thankful hunter…thank you for that & so much more! I’ll miss our dancing, I’m practicing my twirls, so keep our dance goin till we meet again….

We are sorry we can’t make the service but our thoughts are with you. We feel very honored to have known Garry even though it was a relatively short time. He made us feel so very welcome to Dyke Drive and Ted was looking forward to many more fishing expeditions with him. We enjoyed visiting with Garry and Betty and sampling his famous cherry drink on occasion. We will really miss him and the neighborhood will never be the same without him. Please accept our condolences for a man that was a good friend for too short a time.

I came to know Gary through his visits with the Wolf River Tent and Fishing Club to our land with its majestic hemlock grove on the mighty Wolf River. It was clear early on that he had a sharp intellect, love of family and of teaching, and enjoyed the outdoors and comraderie of the WRT&FC brotherhood. He was only on this earth 73 years but he left a very positive impact on all the lives he touched. My condolences to his family.

  12. Duan and Vicki Damron says:

    Dearest Betty, Garry and Chris,
We are so sad for the loss of your incredible Dad and loving Husband. His constant attention and respect for Betty was always so beautifully on display. Looking back over 30 years of friendship, our fond memories of his humor and love of friends and family will now have to sustain us. We’ll miss his friendly phone calls just to catch up. The Gods of the Wolf River have seen fit to call him home. Now, he, Cliff and Frazier can enjoy fishing and late night camaraderie with the Gods forever. Garry, you’ll ALWAYS be in our memories.

  13. Kaye (VanAlstine) Cherry says:

Have thought of you often through the years, Rest in Peace…. you were a great math teacher, and the ONLY one I know who gave a hapless, seemingly hopeless Algebra student an E for a quarter instead of an F, spent many after school sessions with me until I finally “got it” and got a C.

  14. Bob Rauscher says:

So sorry to hear of Gary’s passing. What a great guy. Lots of memories; playing cards, basketball pickup games on Sunday afternoons, get togethers at the Parker Pen Club House, etc. Gary even took me out cross country skiing when I bought a pair of skis. He had to show the novice a few things. I can still remember Gary’s exasperation at young teachers, and I was one of them for a while, when they would continue to ask questions at our staff meetings after school…. funny. Oh and the stories…. he had plenty of them. I am happy to have called Gary a friend.

  15. Nicole Bink says:

    I will miss you alot

  16. Kay Robertson says:

Garry Sr. was my daughter Martha’s father-in-law. We met for the first time at Garry Jr. and Martha’s weddng in Sitka in 2005. When I laid eyes on Garry Sr., my first thought was that he reminded me of The Great Gildersleeve. Ever since that time he has been affectionately called “Gilder” by me and several others. I will miss him and am so sorry for Betty, Garry Jr and Chris that he is no longer with us here on this earth. May God comfort you all and give you peace!

  17. Jeff, Beth & Colt Foglesong says:

  21. Katie and John Stites says:

Garry is my cousin by marriage and I’ve had the privilege to know him for forty-four years. I would describe him as an extremely kind and compassionate, outgoing, friendly man with a wonderful sense of humor. We enjoyed hearing about his travels, love of nature, golf outings with Betty and bragging about his exceptional granddaughter! Most certainly, he was a very loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and son-in-law. We’ll miss him.
With deepest sympathy, Katie and John

  22. Russ and Ellen Hendrickson says:

    Betty and Family-
God Bless You All. Garry and I were classmates from our first year in kindergarten until we graduated from Cloquet High School in 1959. We always made it a point to get together at all the class reunions and we were avid e-mailers with jokes and bragging how well we did hunting and fishing. Gar and I were both active in Basketball and track during our high school years.
I have never met a nicer guy than Garry and it was a h0nor to be his friend. Our sympathy is with you all at this time.
